Change Makers

This project is part of a wider plan to recognise some of Shepton’s pioneering women by Historic England through the Blue Plaques scheme.
Imagine a time when you had no say
When your voice didn’t count
When just because you were a woman meant you were worth less to society
There were many women who campaigned against this in Shepton Mallet. Women who helped change society locally right here in Shepton Mallet - such as trailblazer Annie Hyatt (suffragette campaigner and one of the first female doctors in the UK) and Louie Hatfield (who was a housekeeper to a lady called Anne Kenny – leader of suffragettes who brought the movement to Shepton). Jean Allen - an activist, pioneer in arts and crafts and founder of the National Home Reading Union in Shepton Mallet

LAUNCH ASSEMBLY

At the start of February we will be bringing Louie Hatfield into schools. This will be a surprise element for children taking part. Louie will be in character and perhaps come into assemblies.

The assembly will focus on
Giving an immersive experience of what life was like as a suffragette
Giving students an understanding of the role of women in Shepton Mallet
Introducing or expanding on the concept of Social Change and giving modern day references
Offering an immersive experience of the challenges faced by women

WORKSHOP

-
After the launch there will be a workshop for one year group or class. In these we will:
-
Look at artefacts from the suffragette movement
-
Explore what life was like in the community / school for women at the time through a bit of roleplay
-
Think about where your voice is heard / how you can make your voice heard
-
Explore some of the difficult challenges people faced
-
Students will choose one area they feel would like to stand up for and workshops some ideas for how to bring about change.
-
Record some collective soundscapes inspired by the time.
